Sui

Sui Dynasty

Introduction

Sui dynasty was a dynasty that existed for a very short period of time, 581 CE – 618 CE which is only almost 40 years. 40 Years is a very short period of time compared to other dynasties like Han Dynasty which lasted around 426 years which is from 206 BCE to 220 CE. Although Sui dynasty lasted for only about 40 years its achievements weren’t useless and not recognizable. Sui dynasty was famous for reuniting China after it has been split into many pieces. The campaign was led by Yang Chien who was called Emperor Wen Ti. Yang Chien also had a son who later became an emperor named Yang. The Sui dynasty was found by Yang Chien and he established the capital as the city Chang’an and now known as Xi an.

Reasons for take over

The Sui dynasty rose up and ruled china because of Yang Chien’s greed. Yang Chien was a normal noble who wanted to rule China and gain power. One day he decided that he must unite china so he gathered up his army and attacked the northern part of china which he lived in because he wanted to be the one to rule not 60 men ruling. After the northern part was demolished by Yang Chien he moved down south and attacked. Not too long after the attacks Yang Chien won and created the Sui dynasty in which he was the emperor and he established the city Chang’an as the capital of the Sui Dynasty.

Leaders the Sui Dynasty

Emperor Wen Ti (Wendi) was the person who created the Sui dynasty and he was the first emperor of the dynasty. He also has a son who later became the emperor too. His son was Emperor Yang Ti (Yangdi) and he ruled Sui Dynasty after his dad passed away which was maybe a murder.

Leaders at the same period of time

Pope Pelagius II was pope from 579 CE – 590 CE. He was roman and his father was Winigild. His big and famous actions were related to Lombards or in other name Schism of the three chapters. Pope Pelagius II asked for help from emperor Maurice to go against Lombards but it was almost useless and forced Pope to start the practice of buying truce. Pelagius then turned to Frank (the person who invaded Italy) then left Frank after being bribed by the Lombards. Pelagius promoted the celibacy of clergy which was very strict that Pope Gregory I had the come out and modified some of the rules. He was also behin the construction of Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, a shrine where saint Lawrence was killed. His reign was ended by the plague that was new to Rome and died at the end of 589 CE.

Accomplishments

There were many accomplishments during the Sui dynasty but the most famous accomplishment seems to be the Grand Canal. In the building of Grand Canal both men and women were forced labors to build the Grand Canal which was from Hangzhou across to the Yangzi River to Yangzhou and Louyang. The other accomplishments were building of granaries around the capitals, the fortification of the Great Wall along the northern borders, the reconstruction of the two capitals near the Yellow River, and building of another capital in Yangchow.

Reasons for fall

The Sui Dynasty’s fall seems like a suicide. The Dynasty chose to have wars and invaded countries and as a result it loses men and money causing higher tax which suffered people of the Sui Dynasty. The war that seemed to be the best reason for the fall of Sui Dynasty was Goguryeo-Sui wars. The Sui dynasty fall because of the high tax price and the increase of number in wars.

Freezing Rain

Introduction

There are many type of precipitation and one of the hazardous ones is the freezing rain. Freezing rain starts out being just normal snow at a very high altitude. Then the snow falls down through layer of air which is above and below the freezing temperature (at the same time the snow melts). This causes the snow to become super cooled. This means that when this snow that melt into water hits on any object in its way it will freeze into ice and it could be stacked with several layers which would be called glaze ice.

Causes

Freezing rain happens in winter season when rain is produced in warm air mass area. Later the rain falls through a thin layer of cold air mass area (the layer must be thin enough so the rain that passes wouldn’t freeze before it encounter with an object) below it cooling the rain to a state which is called super cooled. However if the cold air mass area is thicker than it must be the rain would freeze and form ice pellets.

Effects

Normally freezing rain doesn’t look very dangerous. Well, it wouldn’t be dangerous the freezing rain doesn’t accumulate a lot. Who would’ve thought that this water that hit the grounds and freezes leaving a beautiful looking ice would be hazardous? People who think like the line above is true are people who will regret underestimating the power of freezing rain. If the freezing rain creates ice that accumulates more than half inch tree limbs, branches and power lines would start to be destroyed. Then it will be several days before the electricity can be fixed to restore the power (this means that the freezing rain stops as soon as it damages, if it rains continuously it would be another story). The damage from the freezing rain may cause many million dollars and may be a hard work for the country’s government depending on whether it is LEDC or MEDC.

Areas Affected

Freezing rain can occur anywhere in the world that has low temperature and could at least snow. This is a map of areas that could be affected by freezing rain in USA.

Prevention

I cannot find any information of how to prevent freezing rain since it is nature and there’s almost nothing we could do to it.

LEDC/MEDC

Freezing rain would have different effects on LEDC and MEDC countries. The first factor that causes the effect to vary on LEDC and MEDC is because LEDC has less money. Country with less money would be in disadvantage because they wouldn’t have money to develop their technology or even afford technology to help prevent or diminish the damage. The second factor is that LEDC’s economy will drop rapidly because most LEDC countries depend on agricultural products which freezing rain would destroy with ease.

Why do people live in the prone areas?

Freezing rain is a hazard that is almost not dodge-able if you live in cold climate areas. If you would run away from this hazard and run to other place then more people would live in equatorial/monsoon climate areas which have more hazards that sounds more dangerous than the beautiful freezing rain. People are unaware.
